E.N. (From Bali, Indonesia)
Professional Background: Career Counsellor, Student Office Career & Advising Team, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU)

In my HR role, I oversee three key areas: new graduate recruitment, internship management, and industry-academic collaboration. I plan and execute year-round recruitment activities, aiming to revitalize the organization by acquiring promising young talent.

Internships at ONE DEJIMA go beyond simple company briefings. By collaborating with all departments, we design programs centered on real business challenges. We provide a “solution-based” experience that mirrors actual operations, emphasizing the importance of independent thinking, active discussion, and tangible output.

Regarding industry-academic collaboration, I am also focused on building talent pipelines with universities to secure a steady flow of future hires.

Mission

My goal is to bridge the potential of each individual student with the vision of ONE DEJIMA. Drawing on my previous experience as a university career advisor supporting students, I aim to achieve more than just a selection process; I want to create meaningful matches that lead to future growth.

Furthermore, I feel that a vital part of my role is to identify talent who resonates with our philosophy of “Empowering business from Nagasaki” and to accelerate the evolution of our organization.

Challenges and Solutions

In terms of new graduate recruitment, our current challenge lies in the insufficient awareness of the “Nagasaki x Global” appeal. To address this, we conduct information sessions in both Japanese and English, reaching out to a diverse pool of candidates regardless of nationality. We are also increasing touchpoints with students through continuous updates to our recruitment website and direct university visits.

Regarding internships, we are working to create standardized templates and knowledge-sharing mechanisms to ensure more efficient program management.

Beyond Expectations

The environment here is more “genuinely global” than I had ever imagined. While many companies promote a global image yet retain traditional Japanese customs, ONE DEJIMA’s very approach to business is international, fostering a work style that embraces linguistic and cultural diversity as a given.

Furthermore, I find immense value in an environment where I can deliver results in both Japanese and English, allowing me to leverage my personal strengths to the fullest.

The Most Memorable Experience

This experience involves returning to the university where I once worked as a career advisor, but this time in my new role as a recruiter for ONE DEJIMA, tasked with evaluating students.

Because I know firsthand how much effort students put in, I felt a strong desire to cheer them on, yet I also carried the responsibility of making calm, objective decisions for the company. While grappling with this internal conflict, I truly felt the weight of my role in “choosing as a professional.” This experience stands out as a significant turning point in my career.

Background

Originally from Bali, Indonesia. After moving to Japan, I worked as an interpreter in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, before becoming a career counsellor at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). In addition to supporting students’ career development, I was involved in managing internship programs, serving as a bridge between the university and the corporate world.

While being on the side of sending students out into the workforce and being involved in their selection and recommendation, I began to wonder, “By what criteria do companies select their people?” This sparked a growing interest in HR.

Furthermore, through my work at APU, I had the opportunity to interact with ONE DEJIMA. Getting to know the company from the perspective of an educator was a major turning point for me.

Why ONE DEJIMA?

The turning point was the feedback from students who participated in our internship program. After completing their internships at ONE DEJIMA, students came to me of their own accord and spoke enthusiastically about their experience, saying things like, “It was a fantastic company” and “The work was practical and exciting.” They seemed to feel a unique appeal that set us apart from other companies—not just an observation-based internship, but an environment where they could think for themselves and take on challenges, with approachable employees they felt comfortable consulting.

Another major reason was that while supporting students as a career advisor, I developed a strong desire to move to the side of “selecting talent and building an organization.”

Furthermore, I was drawn to the inclusive environment where diverse talent thrives regardless of nationality, as well as the organizational culture of constantly taking on new challenges, which led to my decision to join the company.

Changes Since Joining

The most significant change has been my transition to the role of an “evaluator.” In truth, I sometimes feel a conflict between my desire to support students’ efforts and growth and the necessity of making objective business decisions. However, it is precisely through this conflict that I have come to fully understand the weight of my role and the magnitude of my responsibilities.

The Uniqueness of ONE DEJIMA

It is a “Local x Global” environment. While being based in the highly livable city of Nagasaki, our perspective is always directed toward the world. I feel that this balance is one of the greatest attractions of ONE DEJIMA.

Furthermore, the fact that our business operations themselves follow “global standards” is a defining characteristic. I was surprised to find that not just the language, but the speed of decision-making and the overall work style reflect a truly international environment.

Introduction to ONE DEJIMA Culture

We have a culture where members from diverse backgrounds come together to exchange ideas openly. In particular, I feel that the proactive contributions from our international members energize our discussions and provide positive inspiration to our Japanese staff. This is also evident in our internships, where students from different cultural backgrounds engage in debates that lead to deeper and more insightful outputs.

Furthermore, the presence of regular opportunities for spontaneous communication, such as office birthday parties, is a key feature that strengthens our sense of organizational unity.

Empowering global business from Nagasaki through “Think Glocal” × “Bridging.”

Integration of Global Perspective and Local Roots: Leveraging my background from Bali and my career support experience in Japan to capture global trends from the heart of Nagasaki.

Cultivating Diverse Talent: Serving as a “bridge” that connects students of all nationalities and diverse backgrounds with the vision of ONE DEJIMA.

Contributing to the Next Generation: By deepening relationships of trust with the local community and universities, I aim to identify the talent who will lead future global business and accelerate the evolution of the organization.

A Message to Future Colleagues

To those who seek to work not just for a “Japanese company,” but for a truly “global enterprise”: At ONE DEJIMA, it is not just our language, but our very business processes that meet global standards. We offer an environment where you can stay rooted in Nagasaki while engaging in work that connects with the world. Your background brings more than just a skill—it is a force that brings new value to our organization.
