ONE DEJIMA and Farm Work at Ōnakao Rice Terrace!
On July 20, 2025, members of ONE DEJIMA participated in a weeding event at the Ōnakao Tanada (rice terrace) in Nagasaki City’s Sotome district.
The rice terraces here are facing the challenge of maintenance due to a declining birthrate, an aging population, and issues with productivity. In response, ONE DEJIMA has been working with the Rice Terraces Preservation Cooperative to create a space for employees, their families, and friends to gather and learn through farm work.
Six ONE DEJIMA employees participated on this day. They gathered at the Onakao rice terrace at 9 a.m. and received an explanation about the rice’s growth status and the day’s schedule from the Preservation Cooperative members.
After the briefing, everyone moved to the paddies to start weeding.
The rice plants were growing vibrant and green!
Building on the previous rice-planting event, participants carefully removed weeds like Burhead and Arrowhead that had sprouted between the rice plants. Many struggled a bit with the unstable footing in the paddy, but they diligently worked to help the rice grow better.
Small animals like tadpoles even appeared during the weeding process!
Once the weeding was done, everyone washed the mud from their tools and feet in the waterway.
After that, the day’s activities continued with a fun round of watermelon splitting.
From kids to adults, everyone took turns with a blindfold on, swinging a bamboo stick with all their strength while being guided by others.
At first, participants had a tough time breaking the watermelons, but once they got the hang of it, one watermelon after another split open and cheers rose from the crowd as everyone enjoyed the tasty fruit.
The event concluded with everyone making Tanabata (Star Festival) decorations.
